I have 512 megs of memory and use my machine mainly to surf the web for
research puroses. Can I get rid of the swap file and/or virtual memory?
Simply because I find it inelegant

Not a good idea.

The reader should exercise normal caution and backup the Registry and
data files regularly, and especially before making any changes to their
PC, as well as performing regular virus and spyware scans. I am not
liable for problems or mishaps that occur from the reader using advice
posted here.

The Swap File and Virtual Memory are the same thing, you can remove it,
however I would not recommend this as you will notice a drop in performance.

To disable it do the following.

Click Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced Tab > Settings Button under
the Performance Heading > Advanced Tab > Change Button > Click on each drive
you have in turn and click on the "No Paging File" radio button, make sure
you click the set button for each drive. > Click Ok and close back to desktop

Now restart your machine

Inelegant? It seems very elegant to me. Without it, it would just end
up jumping in and our of your hard drive and slow down you machine for no
gain that I can see.

Would you explain what you mean by inelegant?
