Hi, Allan.
The default setting in WinXP for "what to do on system failure" is to
reboot. This is fine for newbies, since so many computer problems are
solved by a simple reboot. But, when a reboot does not fix things, we are
left with no clues. :>(
Go to System Properties | Advanced | Startup and Recovery Settings. Under
System failure, clear the check from the box in front of Automatically
restart.
This won't fix the problem, but next time, instead of rebooting, the
computer will halt with a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). You'll have to hit
the Reset switch, but before you do, read and copy down verbatim all those
cryptic codes. Include those in your next post and some guru here (not me!)
should be able to point you in the right direction.
In that next message, you might also mention whether you are using dial-up,
ADSL, cable or ?? And whether your ISP is a local company (like mine) or
one of the Big Boys that some users might recognize and have solved a
similar problem with.

Hi, again, Allan.
I should also note that WinXP handles hardware SO differently from Win98
that old drivers almost certainly will not work with WinXP. When
"upgrading" from Win98, WinXP Setup attempts to "migrate" device drivers for
your hardware, including modems, but this is not always 100% successful. If
the WinXP CD-ROM does not include WinXP drivers for YOUR modem, you'll have
to get those from the maker of that modem.

Thanks for telling me how to stop that auto reboot because
I was able to get the error message.
I am going to repost with the error.
