View Full Version : SP2 Firewall question
Colleen Gayle Lane
August 26th 04, 03:02 PM
Good morning.
I installed XP SP2 yesterday and everything ran well. Didn't have any
problems with programs that I use. However, last night the backup from our
server failed because the server could not connect to my pc. This was
because of the SP2 Firewall. However, I had ticked that the firewall was
supposed to display a notification when the firewall blocks a program, but
it didn't. If it had I could have told it to allow the connection. We use
Arcserve to perform the backup every night. Has anyone else had a similar
problem?
Thanks.

If your network is protected by a hardware firewall then just turn the xp
firewall off.

Well, I could, but I would really prefer to figure this out.

You probably have to open the ports in the firewall that your backup program
uses. I would imagine they would have that info on their website, or in the
help file, or they could provide it to you in email. Or a program like
TCPView will tell you what's running and on what ports.
To open the ports in the firewall, goto control panel, windows firewall,
exceptions tab.

But if you are protected by a hardware firewall then the windows firewall is
superfluous surely??

Actually found this at microsoft.com:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242&product=windowsxpsp2
I'll try enabling the ports they mention for Arcserve.

I'm sure it is, but that doesn't answer why the firewall isn't informing me
of the attempt to connect.

Even if you are behind a network firewall, there are still reasons to want
the windows firewall on. Protection from other pc's on the LAN is one
reason. Also, you may have a laptop that you travel with, in which case the
network firewall only protects you while you're on the LAN.

Ya, there you go. I actually had that link, but forgot to post it. Should

Worked perfectly. I opened the ports they suggest. I'd still like to know
why the sp2 firewall didn't inform me of the attempt to connect last night
though.

That I'm not sure of. Is the notification just a pop-up that dissapears
after a certain amount of time, maybe? (i don't use the xp firewall).

I thought that too. Because I am logged out and in bed at home while the
back is running so I wouldn't have noticed a notification. So I tried
another backup right away this morning to see if I would get a notification
and I didn't. Maybe you only get notifications if something from outside of
the network tries to connect.

Ya, that could be. Or could just be that the notification doesn't work all
that good. XP's firewall has never been "feature rich".

And I guess that's proof that it works pretty good since it was something
that our network firewall hadn't ever caught.

You will need to go to Control Panel - Windows firewall and on the
exceptions page Add and browse to the backup program you use. Also the
download may be initiated by the other end sending a request to a
specific port rather than the program. In that case you would need to
find which it uses and add that port too

Hi Colleen,
I think you only get notification when the program is added to the
Exceptions list. If it already exists and is unchecked, you won't be
warned. If you delete it from the list, you should be warned the next
time...
