How can I get rid of the pop up ads? I never had
any 'pop' up during routine pc usage, only in Explorer,
now they pop up in front of whatever I'm doing. Help me
rid the PC of this plague.

Try searching the group for "pop-ups". 42 messages in the last two weeks.

For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904

Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve the
real problem.

The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom of a larger
issue. The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.

Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports. You would need a
firewall that controls the traffic.

The above solution will not work if you have AOL as is not compatible with
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). If you have AOL, you should
contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Hit the Stop Button under Service Status section
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or

For internet pop-ups, try one of these:

Try "popup killer 1.4 Its free and works well. There is an option to disable
it from the system tray, which you might want to use at times when you want
good popups. Go to google type popup killer, click on xFX:jump start: popup
killer.

Another good free download is Ad-Aware 6.0, which can clean out your system
of these annoyances. You can download it from www.lavasoft.com

But most pop-up spam is due to open ports. Is "pop-up killer" a firewall?
Does Ad-aware block incoming tcp/ip traffic? I don't think so. The ONLY
proper solution is a good firewall.

You may want to look over the whole page.

Go to "services" under administrative tools. Look for a service call
"messenger", open it and click on Stop, then change the startup type to
manual.
