View Full Version : SP2: no NIC card entree

Having just installed Service Pack 2 for my Home XP edition, I couldn't help
notice that there is no longer any entree for the ethernet card in the
Device Manager. Same for the Network Connection section of the Contol
Panel.
The card is a Intel Pro 100 Management Adaptor. At the time it was using
the drivers that from the Win XP CD.
Booting into safe made shows the card, but will not allow me to
remove/uninstall. Attempts to add new hardware or install later drivers
failed also.
Despite all that, I can still connect to the internet.
Has anyone else had a similiar problem and a solution?

Sounds pretty similar to what I am getting.
The network setup wizard fails to find my network hardware
I can see it on the devi=ce manager if I set to view hidden devices, but if
I try to uninstall these then this fails as the devices are apparently
needed for when the computer reboots!
This happens even if the NIC are physiaclly removed from the computer!
I've notified MS support but had no reply sofar. Adding a new differnt brand
of NIC makes no differnce, as you, it works but not shown in device manager
:-(

XP "remembers" each instance of a NIC & it's associated
Local Area Connection. This is why you'll sometimes see
Local Area Connect Number X in Network Connections.
The only way to purge/clean them out is via the Registry. It's
somewhat complicated, as you must be careful to delete the
correct sub-keys in \Control\Network tree of Current control
set.

I had this problem, using the network version of SP2
Take a look in View hidden devices in device manager. An
NIC should be shown there. Mine had been renamed, and a
different driver installed. Nothing I did would allow
access to the settings or to uninstall and let windows
redetect. Fortunately the machine it is on is a spare
one a the moment, so I did a clean reinstall and all
seems OK. In fact it all seems as normal as before SP2,
so perhaps that is the best way to do it - if there is
time. This machine got the update download and all seems
OK., there were only a couple of small glitches to sort
out and after a few reboots all seems fine.
Hope this helps

Is this a reinstall of SP2?
Or the whole of WinXP?

I reinstalled windows completely from scratch and then
installed sp2 from the download I had made, and then did
all the adjusting of Av software etc. I couln't spend
any more time fiddling around trying to get it to work.
I suppose though, if you have lots of data and apps it
will be a real pain to do it that way, but sometimes a
bit of grief is worth it if you get a perfect system out
of it. I did use Ghost to create an image to restore
just in case.
The strange part of all this is the spare PC is almost
the same spec (Intel Mobos with on board NICs and fully
patched windows SP1) as the main one which installed
without any problems :-) I did my laptop and all was OK
but I still have another desktop to do on this network,
and it has some games on it so there may be problems :-(

I'm suffering the same problem... I also noticed that not only the NIC Card
is not showing... other drives also (example AC97 Audio Onboard Sound Card,
and when i try to reinstall the drivers it doesnt find the chipset of the
sound card!)...This is ridiculous!!
