sp2 installation problem

I've downloaded sp2 successfully but installation freezes
after it is only about 1/3 complete?

Have you tried going into safe mode to install? You may have some software or
hardware interfering.

SP2 can't be installed from Safe Mode.

Uhmm, I guess I did the impossible then. I installed while in Safe Mode
on 3 of my 4 computers (3 laptops and 1 desktop).

No problems on the laptops and a minor hiccup on the desktop
post-installation that was easily cured.

It appears so according to all obvious indications. Any one driver or
system file I should check?

Curiously enough the older laptops (2 and 4 years) had a noticable
improvement in performance upon restart. The newer one no noticable
difference in performance.

The desktop had minor hiccups some of which were initially unrelated to
sp2 but were aggravated by it but it still installed.

I used the single file to install not windows update, btw.
