I successfully downloaded and installed the sp2. All was working perfect
until I tried to download and install an optional item in the Windows Update.
For some reason the Windows Update thought I needed to get updated software
for my usb optical mouse. I downloaded the update and installed it.

The computer restarted itself, but never finished. In other words it
rebooted, almost completed the reboot, then rebooted again.

I ended up formattiing and reinstalling xp.

Needless to say, sp2 can wait!!

People say to never download optional software/hardware
updates from Microsoft. I have in the past, and all went
well. People wondering to wait on SP2, should because (as
I have said in many other posts) if you have special
hardware AND/OR software, things might not be compatable.
But if you have a factory built, with common specs, SP2
should be okay to download.

Donald;

NEVER download device drivers from Microsoft update. They are posted for
enterprise machines designed to run identical setups with no third party
drivers. Unless you are running a "plain vanilla" network or a server farm,
don't download device drivers from the WU site.

When the system reboots, it's telling you that you have a problem. If it was possible,
you should have booted into Safe Mode (F8 key on boot, but before the Windows logo, then
select Safe Mode). When the Safe Mode desktop had loaded, right clicking the My Computer
desktop icon, left clicking Properties, clicking the Advanced tab. Under the Startup and
Recovery heading clicking the Settings button. When the Startup and Recovery window
opened under the heading System Failure clicking to remove the checkmark in the box to the
left of Automatically Restart, then OK your way out of all the windows. That way, instead
of the system constantly rebooting, you would have been able to see the error message, and
probably fix the problem without having to reinstall. Now that you've already
reinstalled, remove that checkmark to the left of Automatically Restart by right clicking
the My Computer icon in Normal Mode, and accessing that option as described above. Then
the next time a similar problem arises, instead of the constant system rebooting, you will
see the error message for the problem, which you if can't fix yourself, you can post the
details of that error message here. Reinstalling Windows XP should be the last resort,
and is done far too often, when other, less drastic measures might have fixed the problem.

For reboot problem, try booting in safe mode first and try to fix problem as
other user has specified you.

It is NEVER a good idea to download hardware drivers from the Windows Update
site! ALWAYS use the drivers supplied directly from the manufacturer of the
hardware. Use the original driver disk or go to the manufacturer of the
hardware and download the most current version.
I personally have had the most current version of the drivers installed on
my system and had the Windows Update site try to push older drivers on me.

Certainly instills confidence in WU for the general user, doesn't it? I too
have had problems with driver installs via WU and now resort to
manufacturer's web site(s), although this too can lead to problems if the
drivers there aren't compatible with recently released updates on WU. Had
this sort of cat/mouse problem with an ATi driver and updates posted on WU
some time ago...neither Microsoft or ATi would fess-up to the problem until
a new version of DirectX appeared that magically fixed my problems.

Why drivers should be listed on WU at all for the general home user is a
mystery to me. Instead, why can't WU poll driver dates on a client machine
and alert the user to visit a manufacturer's web site if a driver is > 'x' #
months, years, etc. (as specified by the user).

This has nothing to do with SP2 but with the driver for your mouse you
got from MS. Never use driver updates from MS, only use them from
manufaturer of the hardware.

You didn't need to format and re-install either, you probably could have
simply booted to Safe Mode and rolled back the mouse driver.
