I'm a new user to XP and am trying to use the backup
facility. I seem to go through all the right moves only to
get the following message

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "GLAU.bkf created 23/06/2003 at 22:37"

Error returned while creating the volume shadow
copy:800423f4
Aborting Backup.

----------------------

The operation did not successfully complete.

----------------------

What am I doing wrong

Bernard,

Backup aborts because it fails to create a shadow copy. In windows XP,
backup uses the Volume Shadow Copy service for creating a shadow-copy
volume. The backup application then copies the files from the shadow copy
volume to the backup media.

In order to analyze the problem on your machine better, can you please
1) Run from a Cmd window "vssadmin list writers" right after the error
occurs and reply to the group with the output.
2) Check in the event log in Application Log whether there are any logs with
Source=VSS around the time of the failure? If so, please reply with the logs
text.

Thanks,
Ran

P.S. Shadow Copy/Backup/VSS problems are better answered on
microsoft.public.windows.file_system

Does replying to this thread the same as replying to the group like you suggested earlier? I know that "microsoft.public.windows.file_system" has something to do with a news group but I don't know anything about news group and am not sure which forum that belongs to.
