As I said above, I already added mcafee.com to my trusted sites zone. I am
using custom security settings for the trusted zone, and have, I believe,
lowered my security level for trusted sites as far as it can go. That
includes disabling the pop-up blocker.
The problem is, that the McAfee Antivirus program is using Internet Explorer
and ActiveX controls for its operations, even those that don't require
internet access, and I can find no way to change my security settings to
allow it to work. I can't figure out how to add
"mcp://k:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\vsoui.dll::scannow.htm" to my trusted
sites zone! I've tried, and it won't accept it!
Thanks, anyway.
(I'm crossposting this to microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support and
microsoft.public.windowsxp.security_admin, in the hope that a wider audience
may provide a solution)

I would start with IE's security settings for the Internet zone.
Properties, Security tab.
Select Internet and click Custom Level.
Under ActiveX Controls and Plugin, make sure the last two (run AX Plugins
and Scripted AX marked safe) are Enabled.

Try this. In I.E. click Tools>Internet Options select the Programs tab
then click Manage Add-ons. Make sure everything related to McAfee is enabled

With your Internet Explorer window open click on Tools and then Internet
Options. Select the Security Tab and then click on Custom Level where you
can modify the Active X settings to your personal preference.
I hope that works,it's all I could find.

Clear the box that says "Display a notification about every script error".
Click Apply and then OK.
