View Full Version : Turning off XP Firewall in SP2

I just installed Service Pack 2 and I turned off the
built in Firewall. I also checked the option to not
monitor for a firewall because I have my own. After
every couple of reboots this option turns itself off and
gives me the same annoying message that I do not have a
firewall.
How can I set this and not have it reset itself?
Thanks!

I am also experiencing the same issue, and help would be appreciated.

Hi
Several others have reported this issue, only way to avoid this
resetting is to disable the Security Center service.
Start/Run --> services.msc
Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.
There is also a Group Policy setting available to disable the
Security Center (Start/Run--> gpedit.msc).
Take a look at the chapter for the Security Center in
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC
What settings are added or changed in Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Group Policy settings (page 26 for me)
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC ("Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP
Service Pack 2, Part 6: Computer Maintenance") can be downloaded from here:

Note: WinXPSP2_Documentation.zip contains all the .doc downloads...
Someone in another newsgroup thread indicated that a Symantec service
was the cause for this behavior on his computer (I can't remember in
what newsgroup though).

Yes it seems the only way to alleviate this issue is to go into services
and disable Security Center. After spending several minutes with a MS
technician who seems to be reading off a prompter on his computer I believe,
their techs are clueless. They told me basically, "We don't know what to
tell you." Gee thanx!
