If you are talking about one specific document, it's possible it was created
in an application other than what is installed on your system. If you mean
you cannot read any document, you need to install a word processor that can
read the format. If they were created in Word, then you would ordinarily
install MS Word.
There are also viewers for those who only need to read and not create:

What is the document? Specifically, what is the extension (the
last three characters of its name, after the dot)?
What program are you trying to read it with?
Where did you get this document? Did you create it yourself or
did you get it from someone else? Do you know what program it was
created with?
