PC won't boot after SP2

I have a PC that stopped during a restart during the SP2
update.

It just gets to the Windows XP logo screen and then hangs.

Tried to start it in safe mode etc but it stops at the
same place every time.

How can I back out of SP2 or encourage it to complete
successfully?

I had this problem, although not for the same reason.
Suddenly, without warning my laptop hung on the XP logo
screen, same when trying to boot into any safe mode
option, etc. I am on XP1 and wasn't doing anything at
the time this occured. The only thing that worked for me
was to (forgive me, I may not get the wording correct)
taking the original XP cd that came with the laptop, and
do a 'Console Recovery', NOT a reinstall of XP. Doing
the 'recovery' prevented me from losing all my files. If
you reinstall XP, it will want to reformat your hard
drive first. Good luck, Ken

Thanks for that. It seems to be booting up (very slowly)
now.
