View Full Version : Upgrade and microsoft

During the upgrade from 98 to XP, I was told that Microsoft collects
information about your machine and software that you have installed.
Is this true?
Does it also go through check versions and licenses? Do they keep this
information? I would hope not as it is none of their business and I
know this is a sticking point to many people about Windows Update, which
didn't used to do this.
Thanks,
Tom.

No it isn't. Who told you or where did you glean this misinformation from?

And still doesn't. Why do you want to know - have something to hide?

Well it's true in the sense that the install program makes a database of
everything on your machine but that is where the information stays!

Same thing - Windows Update makes a LOCAL catalog of updates downloaded on
your machine - otherwise you would get a notice to download all updates
every time you accessed it! Again I emphasise, this is a LOCAL index and
that is where it stays!

Never heard that one. Must be too sheltered. Like it, though.

Nope. You may run pirated software, I like to buy mine, for the sake of my
conscience.

I didn't say I ran pirated software, which I don't. I just don't like
the idea of anyone thinking he has a right to look at what I have on my
machine.
It's akin to: I wouldn't let the IRS look at anything of mine I didn't
have to.

Sorry to use a term you weren't familiar with. "Fear,
Uncertainly, and Doubt." The spreading of misinformation by those
means.
