So I bit the bullet and decided to install SP2. After a 10 minute download,
it started to install and I got an error message concerning "atapi.sys" not
being able to be copied. Luckily I had my laptop hooked up and was able to
google atapi.sys and found that other people reported the same problem. One
of the programs on my system was causing the problem (Dameon Tools). I
cancelled the install and deleted Dameon Tools, went back to the Microsoft
site and re-did the download. Not sure that it actually downloaded anything
the second time, but it did restart the install for me.
After about 10 minutes, I got a "Successful" message and rebooted as per the
instructions.
On the reboot, the system seemed to stall on loading. My background came up
but no desktop. I waited and waited (about 6 minutes) because my hard drive
light was flickering but nothing appeared on the desktop........
I rebooted again and the same thing happened.
I had to leave for a while so I just left the system on.
While I was out, my little brain was trying to figure out what I had to do
to get my system back to the way it was prior to the install. All the while
cursing Microsoft for the problem.......
I came home and lo and behold, there was my fully functioning system,
desktop and all.. I checked all the software and hardware and everything
worked fine.
I rebooted again and everything came up with no problems and without any
sort of extended startup time..
BTW it did recognize Zone Alarm and Grisoft and did not turn on it's
firewall or antivirus (if there is one) protection. I also use popup stopper
so I turned off Microsoft's.
