I did the SP2 and my laptop hung half way thru the install, so I was forced
to reboot. I tried the SP2 a second time and it hung again but now the
laptop goes thru an endless reboot cycle. If I select safe mode, normal or
anything, it attempts to load xp but briefly pops up a blue screen (so fast
can't view) and reboots and I can not go any further.

I can not find my windows xp home edition cd that it came with, I do
have/own a full licensed copy of XP Pro (not upgrade version). I just want
my data files and than will install my full license copy on the laptop. Is
it possible to install XP Pro Full on my laptop without reformatting my
existing hard drive. When I attempted to do, the only choice given is to
wipe existing hard drive and install new, is there a work around or am I
missing a step. Thank you in advance

there is a command sequence to remove sp2 from the
recovery console, you can boot to your pro cd and the
recovery run that command then remove sp2 from add remove.

Some one recommended that:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

1: Made sure I had all the latest drivers for my peripherals
2: Made sure I had all available updates for my software
3: Did a thorough disk cleanup
4: Did a thorough virus scan
5: Did a thorough adware scan with Ad Aware and Spybot
6: Imaged my hard drive using Powerquest Drive Image
7: Installed SP2 - stand alone network install.
8: Did a complete defrag of my system partition
