The display of the date and time in the taskbar shows each item stacked on
top of each other which causes the taskbar to be too tall. How can I get the
taskbar to display only the time and display the date when I point at the
time?

Hi Hal,
Try doing as follows,
Position the mouse pointer on the top edge of the task bar.The pointer
changes to a double -headed arrow, pointing vertically.
Drag the pointer downwards and release the mouse button. The task bar is made
smaller and you will find only the time on it.
If this is not working ,right click on the task bar and see whether "Lock
The Taskbar" option is checked.if so uncheck it and do as above. It would be
better to lock the task bar after u made the necessary changes so that u
won't change it accidently

I know about dragging the taskbar. That's the problem. It will only drag to
a thin line at the bottom of the screen and not to a single line. It's
minimum displayable height contains the stacked date and time.

Hal, a few things to try:
--Make sure the taskbar is not locked before trying to adjust it. Right
click on taskbar to uncheck the "Lock Taskbar" choice.
-- If you have any toolbars displayed, right click inside of them. Try
to hit a blank space (widen the toolbar if necessary). Choose View>
Small Icons.
-- If one of your toolbars has extended to the full length of the
taskbar, it will force the taskbar to be taller. Remove all toolbars,
resize the taskbar. Reset toolbars.
If the taller height returns, you may have to grab hold of the toolbar
"handle" on the second line of the taskbar. Grab with your mouse to move
it back up to the same line the toolbar is on. The "handles" are the
dotted lines on the taskbar that show when it is not locked.
