We downloaded SP2 successfully but now when the desktop
comes up there are no icons or taskbar. The original
picture is there that we put on it, though. An error
comes up about kernel32.dll. HELP!!

hello (first time poster here)
i seem to have the same problem.
this has solved the problem for me.
"run"
type "services.msc"
look for "DCOM Server Process Launcher"
go into the properties and change the setting
from "automatic" to "manual"
reboot.
the only problem i have found is that you are unable to
use liveupdate for norton systemworks 2004.
the "service" seems to hang when booting or even starting
it manually threw the "services.msc"
i hope microsoft figures out why this is happening, "wink,
wink"

Try booting to safe mode, use the administrator logon, and create a new user
account. Reboot to new user and then copy over the desktop and other items
from the old account. Worked for user I dealt with with the same problem.
See below:
*****
Saw something similar at work the other day on an XP Pro SP1 system. We
could log on to another administrator level account and see that the icons
were there in the correct folder and that the registry for the other user
(used "load hive" to load up his registry) pointed the desktop to the right
folder. However, it was just like you describe - other users were fine, but
this one user was messed up. I tried a test - copied the NTUser.dat file
from the bad profile over the top of another admin profile and the problem
showed up for this other user too. So, we "re-profiled" the user and all is
well now. (saved off the My Documents, Desktop, etc. and deleted the user
profile and recreated it.)

Well, when she boots into Safe Mode she still sees no
icons, taskbar, etc. Just her pic on the desktop is
normal. She is in DOS and can see all her files, etc.,
but the desktop is empty of icons and taskbar.

When you get to the boot menu, where you select Safe Mode, select the "Last
known good configuration" instead. This should resolve the problem.

Last known good configuration didn't work either. It did
the same thing. Explorer.exe seems to have disappeared
AFTER she tried to copy it the first time. Since she was
able to use DOS, we copied explorer.exe from my computer
onto a floppy disc and she copied it into her Windows
folder. Rebooted, it worked great!
