View Full Version : XP freezing since SP2 installed

I recently downloaded SP2 and couldn't log on to my home page (Tiscali) so
their techs advised me to remove it which I did, and that seemed to be the
cure, however since then I get programmes not responding and then the system
freezes. I often cannot open Nero so I have to go to Restore etc and then it
is ok for a few days but then it will happen again. If I try to log off it
takes for ever so I have to turn it off at the mains. I am running a new PC
about a month old with XP Pro using Athlon 2.5 processor and 256 RAM.

Tiscali were wrong to tell you to uninstall SP2, they should have tried to
troubleshoot the problem with you. SP2 does not stop the net from working.
However as a guess I would say that you have some registry corruption, How
did the tech at tiscali get you to uninstall SP2?
Windows XP contains an automatic registry repair tool, however this is very
limited. I would recommend running a Repair install of XP as per the
instructions in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315341
This will reinstall the core set of XP files, while leaving your files and
settings intact, you will need a Windows XP CD to do this.
