View Full Version : Add/Remove Programs post SP2 install

Have been trying to clean up system post SP2 install; after defrag & disk
check general performance seems o.k. although the task-bar notification area
seems to load erratically. One big problem though: when using 'Add Remove
Programs' and trying to uninstall both MS and third party programs e.g.
Quicken, Adobe photo-shop & Outlook Business Contact Manager...the Windows
Uninstall configuration window spools up to about 50% and then just stops.
Task Manager shows the program running & responding but it just 'hangs'. I've
manually aborted the operation & sometimes the program appears cleanly
removed, other times I'm not so sure as files remain on the system even if
the start menu shows it's gone.
Anyone else been having trouble with this?

Talking to myself maybe, but for info'...have found that the uninstall
function does 'eventually' work but incredibly slowly.
Still don't know why the task-bar notification area is acting up though.

Not with Add/Remove. Works fine. One thing I've done to see if the
install actually did install "just fine", since I've had some very
annoying but very small problems, is sfc /scannow from a command prompt.
That seemed to handle a few oddities.
The prefetch is important in SP2. It is a fact that after a few days,
the entire OS works far differently in terms of speed and smoothness as
the prefetch is modified. This might be the problem with Add/Remove
since I've had similar very slow opening and operation of Office
programs that have disappeared after a week of SP2. Nothing I've done
has contributed to this.

Thanks for that...I too have noticed that processes are becoming faster &
more stable as time goes by, Add & Remove programs appears to be settling
down etc.
Fingers crossed I get used to this service pack and that it will ultimately
maintain a stable system.
