On installation of SP2 admin update (dl'd & burnt to CD from MS), it erased
all directories under 'Documents and Settings', ie. all the profiles on the
machine.
Because SP2 takes so long we were doing this concurrently on several
machines (same spec, identical) and managed to wipe half of them before the
first one rebooted and we spotted the error!!!!
The SP2 archive on the CD is ok as we used it at a different site earlier
that day. All deleted profiles are unrecoverable to standard undelete
software, we had to use a disk level scanner to get what we could.
104 man hours later and it looks like that department is up and running with
only a few niggles (most of that was used by us trying to recover files they
'forgot' to keep on the server grrrrrrr)...

Anyone else had this problem?

I forgot to mention, it BSOD on boot up with an instant reset - which is not
enough time for us to write down details. Same in safe mode.
The only thing we could do was reimage all the machines with the original XP
Pro SP1a from one of the working machines.
