View Full Version : XP upgrade locking up - stuck in a loop

I have HP laptop with XP home. I am upgrading to XP
professional - the installation rolls fine until it is
installing the drivers - it keeps stopping at 34 minutes
left.
A restart brings it back, but it locks at the same spot.
I tried to use a boot disk to to go back to my C drive,
but I can't get there.

Try rolling back to your original XP Home Edition setup even if you have to
reinstall it. Then place the XP Pro CD in the drive, when the setup screen
appears, select "Check System Compatibility." This may turn up something
that might be blocking installation.
You may have some borderline item(s) that work fine under Home but might
need to be updated for the XP Pro installation. This is especially true if
you purchased XP Pro recently as it likely contains SP1 and changes in that
setup might make a difference with regard to installing the current version
of XP Pro.
Another possibility is, some OEM setups cannot be upgraded. In other words,
on computers where that is the case, you would have to install XP Pro clean.
