Wiping the hard drive

Before giving a Windows 95 computer away I want to clear the hard drive.
What programs are available?

The one i've used for many years is Ontrack's Data Eraser. That's assuming
the application is still going. A lot of Ontrack software has been tacken
over by techno trend. It comes on a floppy disk and you simply insert the
floppy into your floppy drive and reboot. It uses caldera dos to boot with.
You can then select whether you want to simply erase a partition or a
complete drive. You also have the option of controlling how many times the
drive is overewritten. For a complete drive you can also print out a
certificate to say it has been security wiped. Be aware, thought, that if
you have a large drive it can take many hours, if not days, to wipe the
drive.

Hi Dave,

Search www.google.com for a zero-write utility. While nothing short of a
sledge hammer will prevent data recovery, this will make it fairly difficult
with expensive forensic tools.

John and Rick, thank you both for your information. Being frugal (cheap) I
found "Hard Disk Scrubber" at Summitcn.com. As my friend's drive has little
of importance on it, we'll try it. If he's not satisfied there's always the
ball peen way.
