XP lost a day and time?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 with XP Home, about ten months old, that's
been behaving strangely lately.

Two weeks ago, I reset the clock after noticing that it was several
hours off. Today (Friday),I noticed that the calendar thought it was
still Thursday.

What's causing this? Thanks..

This is often an early sign that the cmos batter is dying and needs to be
replaced.

Thanks, Michael. Is that a common drugstore battery, or is it something
that has to be ordered?

I have a vague recollection of hearing that some Dell's were having
date/time problems caused by a some known flaw ... can't remember the
details. Suggest you check with Dell on this (start with web page I guess).

Rob Schneider remembers having heard about a known flaw in the Dell line
causing problems such as yours. (excellent memory Rob) As far as I can tell
this anomaly does not affect the 8200 Dimension series.

As another poster mentioned the CMOS battery is also a possible candidate
but really shouldn't need replacing so soon. (anything's possible)

Hi Harold,

I get lots of them at the local drugstore, similar to the ones used in
remote car starters that hang on your keychain, or that are used in some kid
watches. The battery type is usually stamped right on the back of the
battery, just make sure you get the same thing.

You're welcome, Harold and Rick in this thread has you covered on the
battery. They certainly can be found at drugstores, just be sure you get
the same kind of battery and you might want to check your system's
documentation as well.

Also, you might want to check what other's have posted in this thread about
a known flaw in some Dell systems as that might be the issue instead of the
battery.
