Open a "command promp" (sometimes called DOS Box). From the Accessories
menu.

Type the commmand:

help chkdsk

and read what it says.

Go to My Computer, right-click on C (or whatever your HDD is called), go to
Properties, go to Tools and run it from there.

Go to Start | Run, and enter chkdsk there.

Don't forget to add the /f switch so that it fixes any errors, other
wise it will just run through and check, but not fix any problems it
finds.

Really? I can't see it matters where it's run from.

it doesn't MATTER, no, but if you run it from My Computer (ie Right-click on
the drive, select Properties and then tools) it means that users who haven't
grown up used to using command lines and dos can access it without having to
use switches etc.
