View Full Version : updating to XP professional from XP home

Is it possible? The computer I had that ran XP
professional crashed and I purchased one that came with
XP home. I had purchased the upgrade to XP professional
for the previous computer. I need to install Internet
Information Services(IIS) to run ASP for a class
assignment. I suspect I will need it more next semester.
The upgrade to XP professional just installs a second
windows OS on the computer. Any help?

In order to upgrade to Windows XP Pro from XP Home, you need
the "retail, upgrade version" of XP Pro. If you have an OEM version
of XP Pro, it cannot be used to upgrade over an existing Windows
installation. It must be installed "clean" on a reformatted drive.

What installation selection did you make during setup.... "upgrade" or
"new installation"? You should have selected "upgrade", otherwise
"new installation" will not upgrade over XP Home.

No, it does that only if you tell it to. You selected the wrong
option when you installed it. You have to tell it to upgrade the
current operating system.

I am choosing upgrade but am getting a blue screen when I
reboot. I have the choice to enter XP Home or XP Pro
Setup but when I enter XP Pro Setup I get the blue screen.

Hi, Theresa.

What brand and model PC? Chances are, you have an OEM version of WinXP
Home. That is, a version that the Original Equipment Manufacturer (like
Dell or HP) has customized for the machine you bought. The retail WinXP Pro
(either Upgrade or full version) should be able to upgrade your WinXP Home,
but there may be some quirks in the OEM Windows or in your hardware that you
will have to deal with.
HOW are you trying to upgrade? Are you booting from the WinXP Pro CD-ROM?
Or are you booting into WinXP Home and trying to run Upgrade from there?
If you will mention the make and model of your WinXP Home computer, someone
here should be able to recognize it and give you some direction.

Hi, Theresa.
I've never had a Gateway or WinXP Home and so have not done this upgrade.
But there are thousands of readers here; now that you've given us this
information, somebody here should be able to help.
Have you checked Gateway's website for support?

I don't think there is an upgrade path using OEM. I think you can ONLY do a
clean install.
