I have recently updated my desktop to XP SP2. I have two shares on that
machine that I map to from my portable. The firewall is now blocking those
shares from my laptop. I can map if I turn off the firewall on the desktop,
drop and remap the share on the laptop. As soon as the firewall is turned
back on the network name cannot be found. Has someone found a way to get
around this? Any help would be appreciated.

On the desktop, go to Control Panel, Windows Firewall. Go to Exceptions =
tab and make sure that File and Print Sharing is checked.

That item is selected. I do notice that the scopes are locked down to my
subnet. Should I open that up wider? My laptop is on a wireless subnet
separate from my desktop.

Yes, if you're blocking traffic from different subnets, you won't be =
able to get to your files.
