View Full Version : XP SP2: chkdsk runs at every boot

I installed XP SP2 on a Dell laptop and now chkdsk /
autochk is running every single time I boot. It didn't do
that before SP2 was installed.

None of the KB articles help except that possibly the
registry hive is corrupted. Everything else seems fine so
if it's corrupted it's subtle.

I've looked everywhere in the control panel and through
the registry for a way to disable this check but with no
luck.

Anyone had a similar problem and found a way to disable it
without drastic measures?

in order for it too run at boot up each time,,sfc/scanboot must be active,,,
type in at cmd windows , sfc/revert this change it back to default
settings

Thanks, took a look at that.
The sfc check runs after the OS loads completely.
I'm referring to the blue chkdsk / autochk screen that
runs after POST.
sfc/revert had no effect on chkdsk.

In the registry, bootcheck is set to "autocheck autochk *"
which is correct according to the KB.

Still can't find a setting to control this but since it
didn't happen before it seems to be something the SP2
install did.

Do you have an older version of ZoneAlarm on the system? One of the
earlier 5.x builds created this error. If this fits your situation,
update ZoneAlarm to a recent build.

How old is your computer? This is also a symptom
of a bad hard drive. Have you made a backup?
