View Full Version : Startup Program Problems

I've been having a problem with a windows XP computer, SP1. It's a Celeron
400 with 256MB RAM. I have a couple of programs in the startup folder that
start up, but don't show their icon in the system tray. This doesn't happen
all the time, but most of it. I can find them in the task manager & end
task if I want & then reload them & they show up fine, but I don't want to
have to do that or to load them manually all the time.
The programs are Hotsync and United Devices screensaver, the one looking for
a cancer cure.
Any ideas on what I can do?
Thanks!

Use MSCONFIG to solve your problem.

How is that going to help me?? The programs are in the startup and in
msconfig & I want them to start up. The problem is that they don't show in
the system tray so I can't access them.

Hi, Michael.
Perhaps you have those icons set to be hidden. Right-click in the
Notification Area (what most of us still call the SysTray). From the popup
menu, click Customize Notifications... | Taskbar | Customize. You can set
the icons individually to Always show, Always hide or Hide when inactive.
This is assuming, of course, that the programs themselves put icons in the
SysTray. Some programs don't. If one has an option within the program to
show its icon, be sure to enable that.

Michael, I hate being the one to tell you this but what you're seeing
is an XP bug. The tray area appears to be a little fragile. Some
combinations of icons work great. Other combinations result in icons
mysteriously disappearing with no discernable pattern.
Usually logging off and logging back on will restart and/or replace
the missing icons. You may want to experiment with startup programs.
For example: If I allow Zone Alarm to load at startup, I lose icons.
If I start it manually, the problem disappears.
Using Always Show instead of hiding tray icons when they're not being
used or setting the first icon to Always Hide has worked for a few
folks too.
