View Full Version : Having Major COM+ Errors with XPSP2

I am having major, repeatable errors, across multiple XP machines (Tablet PC,
and Laptops), occuring after fresh installs of the OS (no applications).

Upgrade to XPSP2 is successful, and the computer functions fine for a while.
I think it functions fine until I do a reboot, but it might be more than 1
reboot. After that, the COM+ system fails to start, and problems occur. The
Windows Installer service fails, the netork connections folder does not
display any network connections, on the tablet PC's the ink functions stop
working. Basically, all of COM fails on the computer.

If you have seen this error, or another like it on a machine running Windows
XP SP2 please let me know. As I said, I have three machines all with the
same errors, all rebuilt from scratch with no applications. I am running all
three on a Windows 2000 Domain with AD. I have a suspicion that maybe there
is some new policy that is causing the problem. I have run spybot, the
balster clean up, and AV on all machines so I dont think that is the issue.

Rolling back to SP1 (via SP2 uninstall) always fixes the problems. The
following errors occur in the event log on the effected machines:

The run-time environment has detected an inconsistency in its internal
state. This indicates a potential instability in the process that could be
caused by the custom components running in the COM+ application, the
components they make use of, or other factors. Error in
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\comsvcs\package\cpackage. cpp(1184), hr = 80070005:
InitEventCollector failed

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal
processing. HRESULT was 80070005 from line 44 of
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemo bj.cpp. Please contact
Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

problem.

I am seeing the same thing. You're right, it only starts after 2 or 3
reboots.

I've been having the same problem since shortly after installing XP2.
I've reinstalled DCOM (instructions at
http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBN/tip6900/rh6951.htm) successfully=, but then
the service wouldn't start. After I enabled it in the registry, and
restarted the PC, I started getting this error again.
