From a hardware perspective, 64 MB of RAM, 1.8 GB of HDD space. This is what
Microsoft recommends. Personally, I'd rather go with 256 MB of RAM and approx
2-3 Gb od disk space. Make sure you have broadband connectivity (Cable/DSL).

Ok that cant be right...

NO 75 MB download will decompress to 1.8 GB

Hi

When installing, SP2 needs a lot of free disk space (1 to 1.5 GB), for
System Restore points, creating backup files so you can uninstall,
temporary expanded installation files and so on. When SP2 is finished,
most of this space is automatically freed again, and some needs to be
manually cleaned up.

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a SP2 installation, take a look here:

The 75MB is only the items that are seen to be needed on *your* system -
and may well be more; when I tried the method it was 114MB. It depends
on how many updates you already have in place - SP1 for example. The
complete package if obtained as a whole, eg on CD, is 266MB

It needs that much space (roughly) during install, to

Hold the downloaded compressed files

Hold the uncompressed ones

Make a very large restore point

Make a folder of files that are needed to uninstall

Make a folder of new files (Windows\ServicePackFiles) for System file
protection to use in the future instead of the ones on your CD.

You can delete all but the last once it is settled in; that one is maybe
500MB, but can conveniently be compressed on an NTFS disk to a bit over
300. But you need the elbow room during and immediately after
installation
