View Full Version : XP Home with SP2 - Shutdown

I have loaded SP2 and the computer seems to have accepted
the OS changes quite well with all programs working as
normal.
However on shutting down it now seems to take much
longer - The shutdown sequence does not freeze and the
system does eventually shut down.
Am I being a bit paranoid here or have other users
experienced similar behaviour.

Before SP2 I couldn't *GET* WinXP Home to shut down
consistently and had to use the reset button (which often
didn't work).

Same here, everything seems to be working just fine but now when I shut
down it takes between 20 to 25 seconds to shutdown which isn't awfully
bad but it seemed to be much faster before the installation of SP2. I
wonder if it has to do with the large restore point created in sytem
restore.

Hello Patrick Q
How long does your system take to finally shutdown?
I recently intalled SP2 and now shutdown and restart
options do not seem to work correctly. In both cases
the "windows shutting down" message appears on the screen
as normal, but that's where it stops. My PC does not
power off with "turn off" option, and it does not restart
if I selected that option. I wait a few minutes, then
power off / power on to restart.
Sidebar: also noticed since installing SP2 that my
Windows Recovery Console will not start. I get Stop
0x0000007B error. This problem only happens with Recovery
Console - normal bootup is just fine. Have you
experienced this?
Regards,
Tom

I recently added a limited account to my system to use when I get on the
interent. Someone in another thread suggested that this could be the
problem, shutting down an administrative and my newly added limited
account could take more time.

Pat -
Yes, I'm having the same problem. Two times out of three
it will shutdown in about 35 seconds. Then it will take
up to five minutes. Grrr. Boot time is OK. I've tried
it with and without Prefetch active. Google searched for
any lead... but so far nothing seems to help.
