My windows auto update just downloaded sp2. I tried unsuccessfully 3 times
to install sp2 previously, twice from the MS website and once from the CD.
Each time I got an access denied error well into the installation. I
decided to wait to install sp2 until MS worked out some of the bugs. I have
been reading posts ont this site and note the problems and successes of SP2
installs.
Question. Does this recent windows auto update download have any fixes that
will correct install problems that I had with the prior sp2 patch and the
CD? I don't want to waste a lot of time on a failed install.

If you have followed instructions and have a computer free of viruses and
adware, any of the methods you have already tried should have installed SP2
for you without problem. So any problems are not the fault of SP2. I
suggest you run a good virus scan, adaware, clean up your computer. Defrag,
reboot and try the CD again.

If you had a successful install and have had no subsequent problems/issues
with SP2 you are fortunate.
I've done all of the above. According to a live MS support engineer, I am
not the only one with this problem. If only 1% of XP pro users have an
install problem, or any other problems from sp2, that is *ALOT* of
customers/users with a problem.

I am delaying purchasing any new computers until SP2 is included with the
system.

Do a clean SP2 install and all will be well if your hardware is reliable

What do you mean by "clean SP2 install"?
My hardware is reliable ASFAIK.

As already mentioned here in other posts:
1) Create a WinXP SP2 slipstreamed CD (use Autostream)
2) Backup all your work files
3) Boot from above created CD, quick format your HD and install XP SP2 from
scratch.
4) Install all your software, printers etc as needed

4 steps that will ease your life installing SP2 - assuming all your software
is ok for SP2. It will take some more time than just upgrading over SP1 but
u (likely) will be happier at the end of the day. It is fine to do a
temporary upgrade if time is an issue (taking the risk) but the clean
install should be done
asap.

Hi

If you get an "Access denied" error when installing SP2, please
see the "Access denied" section here:

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look here:

Michael;
That is reasonable for now.
But what is your plan for later?
The SP-2 of today will likely be identical to SP-2 of next year.

Spend time researching for possible incompatibilities between your
hardware and software and SP-2:

When you are ready, follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:

Torgeir,
Thank you for your response. I may have permission issues according to my
registry. I will give it a try later this week.
BTW your private e-mail activated my McAfee AV program. It had an
attachment that was suspicious for a worm. I let the AV program do its
thing. Could you let me know what that attachment was?

Actually 1% would be very very small especially in light of the
magnitude of the update and the variables involved in different machine
configurations. I would never expect the problem rate to be as low as
1%, but that doesn't mean it's not a solid update. For the vast
majority of users, with proper preparation, it installs just fine. I'm
sorry you're having problems but that doesn't mean the overall roll out
was bad.
