ViewKey doesn't work either according to Michael Stevens. Read it here:

SP2 is certainly cracking down on product keys! New ones should come out soon once 9/11 remembrance is over.

Billy--

I hope someone who knows an official position will clear this up. My
"understanding" was that all through the beta period, the information was
that MSFT was not going to let any pirated/illegit keys work for downloading
SP2, and then quietly reversed that decision because they wanted SP2
deployed everywhere.

Microsoft clears up confusion regarding illegal PIDs in XP SP2

we will continue to evaluate how we deal with security updates for pirated
versions of Windows to best protect our genuine Windows customers."

If you google for SP2 and terms like "keyfinder, ect." you're going to get a
lot of information, and much of it's going to be confusing as well as on
ways to illegal jimmyjack with the keys. There may be some useful legal info
below:

I did some searching. There's always the caveat too, that any of these
keyfinders, particularly from mirror sites can be teeming with virus--I
don't mean spyware--I mean virus so be careful with them.

Michael Stevens' site makes the distinction here, so hopefully you can be
successful. Often also, with some keyfinders, the original OEM key will be
found, and when you get to setup that key won't work.

Maybe there is more precise information on the MSFT security groups.

I have just tested the latest version (1.41) of this utility under windows
XP Professional SP2 but find that the 25 digit keys returned for windows and
Office XP professional are both wrong!. I don't have any problems running
either of them but was simply wondering whether SP2 has anything to do with
this. Has Microsoft decided to crack down on people pirating these keys in
SP2?

If your computer came from Dell, Gateway or many of the other software
manufacturers and you have not reloaded your OS or Office software, the Key
ID will NOT match that provided on the sticker on the side of the case.
Most manufacturers clone their hard drives and use a specific key for all
their installs of Home and a different key for Pro. I found this out by
accident when I had the opportunity to rebuild two Dell machines. One was a
desktop and the other a laptop. Both had the same Product Key for Windows
XP Home and MS Office SBE. I was surprised. There was a different Key on
labels on both machines.

The same key was seen by MJB's key finder program and Belarc Advisor.

Michael Steven also says the same thing with a quote from his site: "If your
system came pre-installed with XP, the Key that ViewKeyXP retrieves may be
the Key the OEM uses to install and not the Key you need to reinstall. If
you reinstalled XP since the initial setup, the Product Key will be the
valid key supplied with the computer."

There may not be a problem.

I am not seeing this problem. All my SP2 systems return the correct Product
Key.
Try this Keyfinder link. Choose run or save it and run later if you wish.

Try Everest Home edition system information utility from the link below to
see what it returns.

I have seen the same thing on every OEM pre-install I've run MJB on and
can confirm. There is no problem and it has nothing to do with SP2 as
these were all on SP1 machines.

I use Aida32 or its successor Everest for this, and they are still
returning the same values under SP2 as before.

That is Product ID, not Product Key, which is the line below and is what
you use in installing XP. Product ID is a secondary, simpler number
derived (irreversibly) from the Key during setup

That will have returned the key used by Dell in making a bulk install
which they then 'cloned' to a whole series of machines. The one for you
to use in a re-install will be its 'personal' one, and will be on a
label fixed to the outside of the machine's case - back panel on a
desktop usually, bottom of a laptop

If you try the Belarc Advisor, it will display both the Product ID and the
Product Key of your MSFT applications installed"

Hey Alex,

I have just used the tool suggested by you (EverestHome110) and it returned
the following items which amazes me a bit:

OS Version: 5.1.2600 (WinXP Retail)
Product ID: 55274-OEM-DDDDDDD-DDDDD

Where D represents a numeric digit. I guess 55274 represents Dell's number
assigned by Microsoft.

Now is it possible that I have used a retail pirated key with Dell's
operating system CD? I was playing with pirated keys and trial versions by
changing few files on the CD sometime ago just to see if they activate
online but obviously, I should now remove them (I have used for nearly 1
year unwittingly!). The product key returned is not the same as the one at
the back of my PC/laptop.

The product ID clearly says the OS is OEM but why the difference in numbers?

If I am still using the pirated key then clearly SP2 hasn't done anything to
stop the abuse. Has Microsoft given up in stopping pirates? I will try to
use the volume licence key which didn't work with SP1 but might just work
with SP2 now to stop me from using an unpatched PC!!! Thanks Microsoft for
giving us more options. If it works then I should duplicate about 2500 CDs
and flog them for $20 each.
