backup files

It is unclear to me how to backup files. I would like to
know which files I should backup, how to get there and
how often I should do the backup. It is clear that
everytime you add new software or change settings that
you should backup but how to do it is unclear. I am
running XP home and have used the restore but I would
like to store my backup on a cd.. would love some help.
