View Full Version : Cd Problems after XP SP2

Seemed o.k. for the first week after installing SP2, but then my dvd-cd rom
drive stopped reading. I almost took it in to the shop as it's under
warranty, but since noticing an error every time I shut down IE now after
the update, I decided to poke around. My e: drive (dvd-cdrom) would not
read a disk, period. I ran sfc /scannow, and it prompted me for the XP
disk which I put in the CD/RW drive, but it wouldn't work, so I put it into
the e: drive, and voila, the e drive could read again. I thought problem
solved, however, when I switch disks it won't change in MY COMPUTER, it
shows the old disk, only will change with a fresh boot....then, my F: drive
crapped on bootup, took 10 minutes with a black screen while light was
blinking constantly and there wasn't even a disk in it....I have 2 LG
Drives, both were bought in Feb. this year.
I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem or any ideas! TIA

Hi Cristine, :)
Here are a few items I have ran into concerning CD devices.
1. Insure that your two devices can act as master or slave, some prefer or
require to be one or the other, so if both want to be master there would be
a problem.
Set the cable and jumpers on the devices correctly.
master on the end, slave in the middle connector, with master / slave
jumpers correct.
Also, check if your device can be run as UDMA.
If there is a UDMA jumper on the back make sure it is jumped so your device
will run at UDMA33 and not pio 4. (Howerver, some older ones will act up at
UDMA33 and with two devices, they should be set to run at the sanme mode.
See device manager, secondary IDE contorler, advanced settings.)
Power supply and control.
If you power Supply is older and on 200 or 230 watss you may be taxing it
with 4 drives.
Power Control - Seems to not want work all the time.
Door won't open , starts up fast and the quits.
Adjusting the bios settings for power control may help.
Dirty drive, fuzz, hair, inside. Dirty CD. Loose cable.
GL, :)

oh yeah, it wouldn't hurt to use an new 80 wire cable with all that EMF
going on with 4 drives. :)
