pointer going everywhere else

Hi all

I have just started using XP and being driven slowly but
surely nuts by the weird dashing about of the pointer.
Whether I am actually touching the mouse or not, the
little pointer arrow suddenly ZAPS away all by itself,
into one of the corners. I try to "aim" it where it
should be, or point to one of the scroll bars, or
whatever, but it just flies away, beyond my control.

It is then difficult to get it back to where I want it.
Once in the corner that arrow plans to stay, and it takes
several jiggles (techie term) of the mouse to move it
back. Seconds later, whoosh, it happens again.

I have gone into the control panel and checked all the
settings about a million times, and read the manuals and
now it is getting silly. Is this something that can be
fixed, please? Or is it just another Windows special
dreamed up by a MS employee who thought this could be a
fun way to annoy people?

What you're describing sounds like the "SnapTo" feature that is available
with some mouse drivers. Whenever the mouse is not in use, the cursor
"snaps to" a corner to be out of the way. There should be a setting in
Control Panel> Mouse for this. If not found there, look for an extra icon
added by your mouse software that may hold additional configuration
settings.
