System Tray Icons Disappeared

All of the usual system tray notification icons - battery
power for laptop, volume, hardware eject - have stopped
appearing even though I have each of them selected to
appear. I have no idea what happened or how to restore
them and I have come up with nothing in the knowledge
base that helps.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
