Free space on HD

Going thru Control Panel to Performance & Maintenance, I
want to Free Space on Hard Disk. Sometimes, won't give me
File Cleanup screen. If it does, stops part way
thru 'Compress old files' - Can't complete process. Same
if I access 'Disk cleanup thru System Tools (Accessories).
Thanks for any 'fix' help.
