Writing Japanese

Would there be anyone out there who is familiar with
writing in Japanese in XP? I think I've done everything
properly--I can toggle between "EN" and "JP" on the task
bar, and the font I choose shows "Japanese", but I get no
floating Japanese input task bar and everything I type
comes out in English characters. Thanks.
