how do i turn off the default monitor?

Hi Jim,
On the Front of the Monitor you should have a On/Off button with a green led
light by it. press it. The light will go off and the motitor will be shut
off.

Your monitor probably not DDC compliant. If it is
PnP just choose the plug and play monitor from the
display properties screen, or install the drivers for
your monitor.
