Usually quite fast, prox 30 seconds.
About 1 time in 3 it then takes 4 to 5 minutes.
Tried both with, and without, Prefetch active in Registry.
Can't find any clues in Event Viewer.
Fragmentation is less than 1.5%
Tried Google search and all leads re "shutdown" found in
this newsgroup. All other functions seem zippy. Just
this random shutdown semi-hang is troublesome. Any new ideas?

See this excellent shutdown troubleshooter:

Yes have noticed that too, or a perhaps similar situation (ie 20-30 seconds
longer on shutdown, but not every time)

Am currently troubleshooting it too.

I *don't* believe it's related to any of the following........

Defragmentation levels
DEP (Data Execution Prevention)
System Restore
Page File size / location
Too many services running ie disabling unnecessary ones
Application and service timeout registry settings
Performance Options settings

Only clue in Event Viewer is this "Warning" , that seems to occur with that
intermittent shutdown delay.......................

************************************************** ******
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 13/09/2004
Time: 21:09:43
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: UNKNOWN
Description:
Windows saved user UNKNOWN\Internet registry while an application or service
was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's
registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.
************************************************** ***************

If you install the UphClean Service (available here
http://tinyurl.com/2h3yl ), it doesn't solve the problem but it
intermittently picks up a fault with svchost.exe on shutdown, suggesting
that it is service related.

There are numerous other services configured to start up either manually or
automatically, so it could be related to one of these
(viewable at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es )

Do not have a solution thus far though
