Windows 95 refers to the 1995 version of Windows,
Windows 98 refers to the 1998 version of Windows,
Windows 2000 refers to the 2000 version of Windows,
Windows NT for New technology,
Windows ME for Millennium Edition,
Windows XP for Experience.

As explained in my Text Book "Understanding Computers, Today and
Tomorrow" from school (Austin Community College).

Thanks a lot! Am teaching an OS class for the first time, told them NT stood for new technology, then someone asked what XP stood for. Never thought about it until that night.

Actually, although "NT" originally stood for "New technology,"
Microsoft's stance these days is that it doesn't stand for
anything.
