i recently updated to win xp home SP2. and now i can't
open certain things like IE or even my control panel. i
can't even open folders from the desktop or start menu.
i can only access the files inside folders through the
run command in the start menu.

i can run other programs but not IE and it doesn't work
even if i use the run command to open it. i'm still
connected to the web, but i just can't use it. i can
browse around the media guide sites in my media players,
but that's about it.

oh and i get a message that says there is an error with
Dr Watson...(something)... and it had to shut down then
it asks me to report the error.

i have no idea what is wrong with my computer, but it
would be nice to get some help, thanks:)

I had exactly thesame problem and I posted it on here.

I then tried to remove the SP2 but it went all funny half way through and
when I restarted the PC the errors had gone but I was told I had to
reactivate windows. It was been dead slow and I couldn't do anything. Then my
start menu went away!

After ringing a support, I was about to do a full system restore because
nothing worked. Then by chance I did something which got my start menu and
things back. Now I can use my PC again....but it still keeps saying register!

Service Pack 2 is proper crap! It caused nothing but trouble, and it doesnt
work on 1 in 10 PC's according to the guy on the phone - he got a right
shouting at from my dad!

Hmmm, I have installed SP2 on 67 computers now and no
problems, so far that 1 out of 10 is not working. I`m it
doesn`t work on 0 out 67 computers. So that number is way
off base.

SP2 is not crap, it is actually fairly good. The main
problem is, people did not properly prepare their computer
for the update. Microsoft should not have had it
automatically download, instead on the windows update
site, should have created a special link for them to show
them how to prepare their computer, then once ready, go to
another link to download what is needed for SP2 install.

Hi Pillow,

Sorry to say that I don`t. Not having such problems on
systems I am working on, its hard to troubleshoot to
determine possible causes. Possible problems are
spyware/malware still present on your computer. During
the upgrade, those programs are able to affect critical
systems files. You probably should run some spyware
checkers, then try a repair. Sorry that I can`t suggest
anything useful.
