Problem: the status of my dial-up connection is always
listed as "disconnected" even while I am connected. When
dial-up connection is activated, the icon for the
connection no longer shows up in the system tray. The
only way I can disconnect the dial-up connection is to
reboot, because all of the normal ways to disconnect
don't work because the status is miscommunicated somehow
to the system as already disconnected.

Problem started: after I defragmented my system drive.
I didn't make any changes to the XP operating system, or
delete any system-related files.

Tried: setting up a new dial-up connection. Made sure
the "show icon in notification area..." box is checked in
both the old and new connections. Rebooted numerous times.

I'm baffled. HELP!!!!!!!

Hello,

I suggest you visit MS-MVP Kelly's website and read

"Troubleshooting the Notification Area" at
