I installed Service Pack 2 and my system failed, it went into a continuous
reboot sequence, and so I decided to rebuild the OS from scratch. I was
reluctant to activate the license (in case it didn't work and I'd have to
activate again) until I was sure that I could get a running system, however
as soon as I tried to install SP2 it failed again and went into the reboot
sequence. Can anyone tell me if this might be a hardware compatibility
issue or if SP2 will not install properly unless activated?

It sounds like you have a Prescott CPU and a BIOS on your motherboard
without the right microcode. This is fixable, it's been covered
extensively, here, do a search

Not a Prescott, but a VIA chipset. Irrrespective, it worked with L2 cache
disabled, although it took a long time doing it that way, but seems to be
fine now. Thanks Barry Watzman!
