View Full Version : after SP2 can't boot from old XP CD...

Hi folks,

I have installed SP2 twice but it makes for a slower
computer in my case - and murders video editing software
which was previously fluid. I wish to revert to the CD
version of XP that came with the computer but the system
won't let me, saying that the CD contains an older
version than the version installed.

Anybody know how I can boot from CD all the same? Nothing
is an important to me as my video editing software.

I would really appreciate someone taking the time to
respond, 'cause I'm puzzled.

Thanks in advance.

Is you plan to be without SP-2?
Reboot
Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel
Double click Service Pack 2
Follow prompts and reboot.

Then before installing SP-2 verify with the manufacturers your
hardware and software are compatible with SP-2.

Thanks Jupiter - but I'm not sure ADD OR REMOVE or SYSTEM RESTORE will work
forme.

I installed Service Pack 2 as part of a re-installation.

I just want to know how to re-install from CD, under the circumstances I
have already outlined.

Many, many thanks.

Insert the Windows CD into the drive and restart the computer. If it does not
boot from it automatically, you need to restart again and enter the BIOS to
tell the computer to boot from the CD before the hard drive. Refer to your
motherboard manual if you do not know how to do this. You can leave the CD
drive as the primary device if you want once you are done, it will scan the
CD drive then boot from the hard drive if nothing bootable is in the CD
drive. This will mean you do not need to fiddle with the BIOS in case you
need to reinstall Windows in the future. If you install from the CD in this
way, it should overwrite Windows without looking at the version installed.
Remember to back up documents etc before you do this.

If this does not work, you can force-format and reinstall - come back if the
above does not work.

From my understanding, if you have installed with a slipstreamed xp with SP2
cd, you cannot repair install with a stock XP cd. You will have to do a
clean install.

Did you use a slipstreamed version of Windows XP SP-2 to install?
If so, if you do not want SP-2, you need to perform a Clean
Installation of Windows XP.

I would suggest verifying compatibility of the software and getting
the latest Windows XP drivers before going that route.

Remove SP2, it's in the control panel / add-remove software item.
