I installed SP2 and now I have no icons or task bar. Further conplicating
this issue when it ctrl alt del nothing happens either. This is a global
issue on this machine concerning all accounts post SP2 install. Another thing
of note, I created a restore point prior to the SP2 install, that is now gone
as well. In safe mode I am unable to uninstall SP2, the error is Access
denied, unable to uninstall.

This sounds like a problem I had. To see if it is the same, try this.

Start in Safe Mode. Click Start - Run. Type in the word msconfig, and
then click OK. Click on the Services tab . Select the Disable All
button. OK out of this and see if your computer will boot. If it does,
then go back to Services, enable all again, then disable only "Shell
Harware Detection", then OK out and reboot. If your computer then
reboots ok, the most probable problem is that one of your CD drives is
slow to respond, and needs to be replaced. You can confirm whether a
CD drive is the problem by looking in Event Viewer under
Administrative Tools, where if I’m right you will see a number of
ATAPI errors.
