View Full Version : XP SP2 IS THE WORST THING EVER

Wayne
September 15th 04, 11:22 AM
I spent the night on the phone to Micro$oft for them to just fob me
off with almost (not our problem!) answers. They got me to install SP2
twice and take it off twice and yet it still does not work. All it
does is reboot my machine after the welcome note comes up, if
Micro$oft think that this is sufficient then they should be very much
mistaken. They really do need to test these things properly before
putting them into the population. I am now thinking of not even
bothering as it is more bother than it is worth. If there is any
permenant problems which have now been caused through there inadequate
experienced staff, they will see a law suit hitting their doorstep
very shortly, or they will be required to get one of their "very
experienced" techie guys to sort out the problem, as I am an IT
manager and I have know idea what these cretins have concocted. I was
amazed by the fob offs saying that it was not there problem it must be
another program which is causing it, however I was only installing SP2
everything else worked before.

All Micro$oft want is a monopoly and do not care about there users and
that they may have non micro$oft software aswell on their machine.

Well I stick two fingers up at Micro$oft and will not be installing
SP2 until they have a finished piece of work

Hi:

Can understand your frustration and I am not a MS fan neither.

But it is my experience that many IT managers or so-called technical experts
cannot figure out where seems to be the problems and causes (needless to say
solutions, of course) but can do one great job - complaining :-)

Thanks for that so I have become more and more knowledgeable on technologies
:-)

Best wishes.

You are a moron of the highest order. You can't even spell "I have know idea
[/sic/]" means you do because the word "know" means "to have knowledge of".

So, you blamed MS for the problems instead of doing what you should have
done and PREPARED YOUR SYSTEM(S) BEFORE INSTALLATION!!

I hope your boss reads this and fires you on the spot!

Fail to prepare - prepare to fail. You didn't follow the Six Step Plan, you
just ploughed on in and installed, didn't you?!

1) Defrag the hard drive(s)
2) Run a systemwide virus scan
3) Run a systemwide spyware scan
4) Update all your drivers
5) Update your software
6) Turn off AVP before installation.

Not MS's problem if you have no common sense! Or just no sense, full stop!

Lost-in-transnation

I can't seem to find the solutions to this set of M$ problems...

Well I broke down and just let that damn autoupdate install that crap
called a Security Patch onto my system.... Here are some quirks I
really hate...

1. It seems that whatever home page I choose in IE is irrelevant
since MSN hijacks it back to MSN.com

2. Though there is a popup blocker, the first thing MSN does is pop up
an ad in a new Window that deceivingly looks like a Microsoft 'click'
here button.

3. The firewall suggests that you uninstall any existing firewalls
(anti competitive practices?) as it might conflict with SP2.

4. For some reason this annoying IE search bar appears as a seperate
window along the bottom of the screen. I can't get rid of it unless I
click the close box [x] in the corner. Just one big piece of annoying
adware! Adaware and Spybot don't see it because it is part of
Microsoft's mission to hide exploits as features!

5. My brother also foolishly installed the Patch w/o consulting me and
found that his Outlook no longer connects to Comcast.com, no matter
what he does.

6. My uncle called me crying that he has auto-updated with SP2 and
IE 6.0 no longer connects to the internet w/ Broadband. Mozilla on
the other hand seems to work fine (most of the time).

I am sure I will here a few more nightmares before the week is out,
however I luckily had no problems with connnectivity or apps, only
that I noticed how awful this patch or should I say Exploit! really
is!

No it won't be. Now will you quit spamming! I Maybe if I report you to your

IMO the best IT managers are those that will tell Microsoft to shove their sp2 - thus saving themselves, and a lot of their clients/users, the potential for a whole lot of unnecessary headaches.

There is not a single thing in sp2 that a system can't run just fine without. However, there are a LOT of things in sp2 that an increasing number of systems can't live with!!

Texas Tech pulled the plug on sp2 after two or three installs. Maybe you suggest their IT department is in the 'Hardly' category?

There is not a single thing in sp2 that a system can't run just fine without. However, there are a LOT of things in sp2 that an increasing number of systems can't live with!!

Texas Tech pulled the plug on sp2 after two or three installs. Maybe you suggest their IT department is in the 'Hardly' category?

Whose 6 point plans are these? Where are they stated on Microsoft's website? if these are prerequisites then M$ should explicitly say so. This f*u*c*k keeps bashing everybody around but knows nothing or contributes nothing.

There is no point in defending SP2 when MS has implicitly accepted that SP2 may not be appropriate for everybody. They have issued a tool to stop it from installing itself via auto-update mechanism. Why would anyone spend time in developing tools just to counterits own patch?

Miss Tick, have you had a patch of SP2 applied to your b*o*o*b*s? Are you good at Monica Lewinski position then?

sat at their desks, staring at blank screen pretend to
look busy. Then go around and give meaningless

If you would read the details of the tool, you would have your answer.
The tool was designed for the group that asked for the tool.
Business users that have lots of computers.

Read about the tool so you can understand before you make more
comments that show otherwise.

Wayne;
"They really do need to test these things properly"
SP-2 was possibly tested more than any other piece of software has in
the past.
Exactly what do you mean by the above statement?
How many windows XP computers in the world?
Now factor in that no two are identical.
How does Microsoft or anyone for that matter test something as big as
a Service Pack on all possible combinations?
Can not be done, impossible.

"I am an IT manager"
Really?
Then SP-2 should have had no surprises to you since your organization
has been testing SP-2 for at least several months to check for
compatibility issues.

"I am now thinking of not even bothering as it is more bother than it
is worth."
Fine, it is your computer.
But you make it sound like you are punishing Microsoft.
How is that?

"...that they may have non micro$oft software aswell on their
machine."
Nothing wrong with non Microsoft software as long as it is well
written.
For years software has been written taking advantage of what are now
vulnerabilities.
Microsoft has taken a big step and followed the demands of the IT
community to make Windows more secure.

Did you at least have a clean computer?
Was the computer ready for Windows XP?
Since your rant gave no details, it is impossible to know.

By the way, what the hell is "I Maybe if " supposed to mean?

Worked perfectly fine on the XP machines I have updated.

I think that if that is the way you see it, you'd be better off calling
someone in to fix it for you.

You are some sort of moron, as all this had been done, and yet the
technical guys at microsoft still could not fix it so get off your
high horse of how I spell and shut the hell up if you have nothing

You cannot spell. You cannot create a grammatically correct sentence. You
cannot follow the basic instructions for installing SP2. Your computer is
not properly maintained...and you say Microsoft produced an unfinished piece
of work? Then you try to pass yourself off as an IT person? Let's
review...
1. Can't spell.
2. Doesn't know the difference between "know" and "no" (i.e. I have know
idea).
3. Lies about being an IT manager (a real IT person would have backed up
*BEFORE* undertaking any service pack.
4. Cannot even muster up a decent rebuttal when slammed.

I agree with anonymous...You are in serious need of a life...

BTW, does it hurt walking around with that huge "L" stuck to your forehead?

Wayne;
Having a new computer says nothing about compatibility issues and very
little about the computer being clean unless you attempted to install
SP-2 the very first thing out of the box.

I just had to grin at that sentence while following this thread. That last

MS killed your burner. Nothing to do with you at all, MS caused it.

Gee, I wonder why, on all the machines on which I have installed SP2, I
haven't had a single problem even to the point of a tax agent sending in tax
returns through a VPN to the tax dept? Maybe because I thought ahead and
made sure? Possibly. Maybe because SP2 doesn't really cause the problems so
much as people without a clue who really cause most problems? More than
likely!

If I remember (great possibility NOT!), the OP is referring to the rule that
sentences aren't supposed to end with a preposition.

Sorry, tens of millions of people have installed SP2 with no problems at
all. I have a DVD burner (I have 3 optical drives, in fact), and mine
wasn't hosed. Yours probably wasn't either.

What PROBABLY happened was this:

XP does not, in and of itself, support DVD playback. Not XP (original),
XP SP1 or XP SP2. To get DVD playback, you need a non-Microsoft MPEG
Codec. You probably had one from some other product, and if you have
one, XP will use it. But installing SP2 may have made it necessary to
reinstall the codec, it is, after all, a new operating system. But I'm
guessing that the DVD drive itself is fine, is still present in "my
computer" and will still see and access both CDs and DVDs (note
"accessing" them is not the same as "playing" them).

What I'd do now is upgrade to Windows media player 10, try the DVD
player to play movies, if it doesn't work, reinstall whatever
non-Microsoft DVD software you had, which will reinstall the codec.
This is probably the DVD playback software that came with your DVD
burner (Power DVD or whatever). Normally, this isn't necessary, but in
your case, for whatever reason, it apparently is.

Two. Many folks in South Africa are fluent in three, but spend most
of thier time using thier second or third language - and being judged
as deficient by those proficiant in that language (typically English).

In my case, I'm proficient in English, but can speak or understand
nothing in South African languages that have the largest user bases.

It's easier to be mindful of the Babel effect in Africa or Europe,
both of which are full of tribal enclaves with different languages,
than in a more monocultural environment like northern USA.

I wouldn't do that were I him. It has a problem with playback of streaming
