View Full Version : After SP2, won't boot past the loading screen...

I installed SP2 on my WinXP Pro desktop. After doing so, the PC will get to the point where it shows the black screen with the Windows XP logo and the loading progress bar. Once it finishes loading, the video is terminated as my monitor displays a message stating it lost it's signal and then proceeds to go into standby mode.
I can get in if I boot into safe mode. Already uninstalled SP2 once (via system restore), but got the exact same effect when I tried to reinstall it.
Idea?

Same problem here - my monitor was an LCD screen and the
default refresh rate chosen by the video card was not
compatible with the monitor (hense the blank screen)
I reset the refresh rate to one the monitor was happy
with (check the documentation that came with the monitor)
and been working ever since.

Oh forgot to mention refresh rate reset while in safe mode

Yes, try to adjust resolution. If not, see this before loading SP2:

I've tried resetting the resolution once I get into safe mode, but the
default safe mode resolution is 800x600... the lowest I can go. The video
settings aren't saved between safe mode and normal mode. I am able to boot
into VGA mode... just can't find how I can go back and essentially tell
WinXP to "ignore all my video settings, go back to lowest common
denominator" so I can boot back to the OS display settings once it's boots
and try different resolutions & refresh rates.

One other thing... I've seen mention of the DEP problem some people are
having. I don't have a Athalon processor and I don't think I have one of
the special affected Intel processors because I downloaded the frequency
checker and checked it against the info in this URL:
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm
I also checked about DEP and how to enable it or disable it... I looked at
the boot ini file and it says OptIn so I changed it to AlwaysOff... but that
didn't fix the problem either.

FIXED!
It's the video drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X. Here's how
I fixed my problem:
1) instaled SP2
2) woudln't boot in normal mode, so I booted to VGA mode
3) downloaded & installed NVIDA drivers for GeForce driver 6.1.7.7 (avail
from their website)
booted correctly first time.
If you have similar issues and would like more details from my config (video
bios # etc), contact me via contact page @ www.andrewconnell.com
