Hi - I know that a lot of people recommend a clean start (or at least a
clean XP install), but a lot of other people say that they've had good
results with an upgrade from well-behaved systems. (of which one of
mine qualifies).
But here's what I don't get - even "Inside Out" promotes upgrade as the
"one-step" solution, but don't you still get the "WIN98" (assuming
that's your old O/S) version of your Apps, running on some sort of XP
code that 'emulates' WIN98. After you upgrade, don't you still have to
re-install any apps that you want full performance on?
thanks!

Some applications have both Win9x and NT versions. Antivirus software and
hardware drivers are a good example of this. These apps should be
uninstalled prior to upgrading from Win9x to NT and must be reinstalled
after if you expect them to run. However many other apps do not require you
to do this at all. The Windows XP Upgrade Advisor will help you sort out
what needs to be removed prior to upgrading. Make certain that you heed the
report it generates.

You really think I can depend on XP to pick up most apps that install
themselves differently under XP? I get about virus scanners and such,
but what about, say, games that have different code for better
performance on XP - how woulw upgrade advisor know?

I don't know of any games that have that specific characteristic.
Some games did come out with a new Windows XP version but that was
because the original version was totally unusable under Windows XP.
The most common cause of this was that the creator of the game used
"cute programmer tricks" such as bypassing the operating system to
write directly to the video, something that is totally prohibited on
all NT based versions of Windows.
Good luck

If you are that concerned then do a clean install.

Yes, I could, but I'd rather convince myself I don't need to - am trying
to get past the FUD to the real issues (if any)
thanks!
